UC research helps astronauts walk on Mars

    When astronauts walk on the surface of Mars in the not too distant future, they will be able to stand up thanks to research at the University of Canberra.
    The University is working with NASA to examine proprioception and how time in space can affect it.

    BroadAgenda explores diverse aspects of gender equality in a fresh, new way. From policy, politics and governance to leadership and the gendered nature of power and authority, the platform gives voice to a wide range of contributors.

2017 UC Athlete in Residence

    Olympic race walker and Yuin woman Beki Smith has been announced as the University of Canberra’s 2017 Athlete in Residence, making her the first Indigenous person appointed to the role.

UC journalism Middle Eastern study tour

    Journalism students from the University of Canberra recently had the chance to work in top newsrooms in the United Arab Emirates and Qatar.
    The international study tour was part of the Australia-Middle East Journalism Exchange, which aims to improve cross-cultural understanding by giving students an insight into other cultures, media and work practices.

UC goes tobacco-free

    As of October 4 2016 the University of Canberra has gone completely tobacco-free in a move to improve the health and wellbeing of all campus users.

UC's 10-year agreement with CareerTrackers

    The University of Canberra has signed a 10-year agreement with CareerTrackers to provide more career opportunities for Aboriginal and Torres Strait islander students.
    CareerTrackers is a national non-profit organisation that creates internship opportunities for Indigenous university students.

    University of Canberra staff and students were empowered to seek support to help them bounce back as part of the Australia and New Zealand University Mental Health and Wellbeing Day.

New UC Residential Development

    Over the next two decades a cutting-edge, sustainable residential development will rise on the University of Canberra campus thanks to a new agreement with one of Australia's leading land developers.
    The agreement with CIC Australia, Peet Limited’s Canberra-based subsidiary will see a multi-stage development of up to 3,300 residences constructed over a 20-year period.

Seeing Stories Exhibition

    Illustrations from beloved childhood stories are on display at the University of Canberra, with the largest and most significant collection of framed original artworks in Australian children’s literature now exhibiting. Organised by the National Centre for Australian Children’s Literature, the Seeing Stories Exhibition of the John Barrow Collection features 40 works from the 1980s through to the early 2000s.

UC sports carnival day kicks off

    University of Canberra students recently took part in the inaugural Sports Carnival Day held by Sport at UC. The day gave students the chance to engage in sport at the University in a social environment.

Academic year kicks off at O-Week

    The University of Canberra welcomed commencing and returning students for Orientation Week (O-Week) on campus. Designed to help students get settled into university life and ready for study, there were many activities throughout the week including advice sessions, campus tours, an amazing race around campus, live music and more.

Paralympian named Athlete in Residence

    Five-time Paralympian and three-time medallist Richard Nicholson has been named the University of Canberra's athlete in residence for 2016.

Students de-stress with a petting zoo, pancakes and puppies

    University of Canberra students were encouraged to unwind ahead of their exams by taking part in stress-less week. In it's fourth year, the University ran the event with a number of activities held throughout the week, including puppies and pancakes, colouring in and a petting zoo, to help students take a break just before exams.

Indigenous school students ‘AIME’ high

    Students from high schools and colleges from Canberra and the NSW surrounding region have celebrated graduating from the Australian Indigenous Mentoring Experience (AIME) program at the University of Canberra.
    The AIME program provides Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander school students with the skills and opportunities to reach their goals.

UC appoints Australia’s first dietitian in residence

    The University of Canberra has appointed renowned nutrition expert Caroline Salisbury as Australia's first dietitian in residence.
    Ms Salisbury will work with staff and students in the Faculty of Health's nutrition and dietetics discipline and the University of Canberra Union catering staff, to help improve the nutritional health and knowledge of the University's community.

Crowd enjoys free big brekky at UC Open Day

    The University of Canberra welcomed more than 6,000 people to its campus for its annual Open Day on Saturday August 29.
    Visitors were treated to a free big breakfast, with more than 50 kilos of bacon, 900 eggs, 720 croissants and 30 crates of fresh fruit served. They also had the opportunity to speak with academic staff, course advisors and current students about the over 200 courses on offer at the University.

Lizard Sex Switch

    A climate-induced change of male dragons into females occurring in the wild has been confirmed for the first time, according to University of Canberra research published on the cover of prestigious international journal Nature.
    Researchers from the University’s Institute of Applied Ecology studied Australian bearded dragons and have been able to show that the reptile’s sex determination process can switch rapidly from one determined by chromosomes to one determined by temperature.

PLAY Launch

    Getting children moving at an early age so they live healthier, longer lives, is the aim of a new resource developed by University of Canberra researchers.
    Researchers from the University’s Research Institute for Sport and Exercise (UCRISE) have created the Physical Literacy Activities Yearbook (PLAY), which includes of 200 activity suggestions designed to help teachers prepare and deliver fun physical education for primary school students.
    The University of Canberra has partnered with the Physical Activity Foundation who will deliver the PLAY resource to primary schools across the ACT as part of the 2015 Active Kids Challenge, an eight-week program designed to inspire and motivate children to get 60 minutes of activity every day.
    PLAY was officially launched at Good Shepherd Catholic Primary School, Amaroo on 17 June 2015 with Year 5 students enjoying some PLAY activities.

UC Research Festival 2015

    The University of Canberra launched its new Health Research Institute as part of its annual Research Festival. The institute was officially opened by ACT Health Minister, Simon Corbell and brings together the University’s expertise in biomedical, biotechnology, clinical sciences, public health and health services research. The University’s Research Festival ran throughout the day, featuring seminars and exhibitions with researchers from disciplines including ecology, forensic sciences, health, education, governance and creative practice.

Canberra International Film Festival 2014

    The Canberra International Film Festival is back for its eighteenth year, which is set to be its biggest. The festival has come a long way since it began at the University of Canberra in 1996 to now at Dendy Cinema. It has slowly grown and expanded over the years and this year is set to be the festival’s biggest, with 65 new films from 29 different countries and 120 screenings across eighteen days. Audience attendance is also expected to rise over 17,000.

    Over 6000 people visited the University of Canberra for it’s annual Open Day on Saturday August 30. The day gave potential students the chance to speak with academic staff, course advisors and current students about over 200 courses on offer at the University.

UC Sporting Commons

    The University of Canberra's new $16 million Sporting Commons, including new headquarters for the University of Canberra Brumbies, ACTSport and sports studies teaching and research facilities, was officially opened by Acting Chief Minister Andrew Barr on 17 July.
