About

Hi, my name's Vanessa. I graduated with Bachelor of Communications in Journalism from the University of Canberra in 2015.

I've always had an interest in news, pop culture, and entertainment. When I was 11 I wanted to be a journalist, since then I've found my way into the Communications field. I love the ability to tell someone's story, whether big or small, everyone has one and I like the idea of getting to be the person who shares that with the world.

Experience

I am currently the Communications Officer at Family & Relationship Services Australia (FRSA). At FRSA, I am responsible for ensuring that all the import work of the Families and Relationship Sector is supported and receives optimal exposure.

I manage FRSA's social media accounts on platforms including Twitter, Facebook, LinkedIn and Youtube.

Writing, curating and distribute key information to members via EDMs including the fortnightly eBulletin, weekly media review, event updates and Members only alerts.

As well as writing and managing publication projects including the Annual Report, research projects and more.

I am also responsible for overseeing all communication material for all of FRSA’s events, including the annual National Conference, Strategic Leadership Forum, Child Inclusive Practice Forums and Parliamentary Briefing Day.

From 2014-2018 I worked in the Media and Communications office at the University of Canberra where I was able to create online, print and video stories for their newspaper Monitor and the University's social media platforms. Here I was able to greatly develop my writing and videography skills. My favourite aspect from this role was getting to meet new and interesting people and giving them a chance to share their story.

I have also completed an internship at the Canberra Times, where I was able to experience the fast paces of a real life newsroom, with deadlines, multiple stories, finding new sources, and handling public complaints.

As well as that, I have undertaken work experience in both television and print journalism at Channel 10 Press Gallery, and CityNews Magazine. Both were very insightful, interesting, and encouraged me to pursue my career path in journalism.

Throughout my degree I was able to experience all the different aspects of journalism from news writing, to video packages, to audio work. Through this I have learnt and gained many skills, so I am confident when it comes to tackling an extensive range of news stories.

Hobbies

I like to dabble in a little but of everything, my interests range from graphic design, to IT, to fashion, to web design, to film making.

I love to travel, explore new places and meet new people. Escape into new worlds by reading and watching movies and TV shows. Building my collection of CDs and vinyl. I'm also a photographer, you can have a look at some of my previous work on my photography page.

"Journalism can never be silent: That is its greatest virtue and its greatest fault. It must speak, and speak immediately, while the echoes of wonder, the claims of triumph and the signs of horror are still in the air.”
– Henry Anatole Grunwald
